annual Christmas poem - 2013

It's again that time of year
that I thoroughly adore
though there's traffic on every street
and lines in every store

I love the cold, crisp air
the abundance of green and red
scents of peppermint and pine
sparkly gold and silver thread

Our lighted tree is a beauty
though a calamity to my surprise
step anywhere near it
and watch the needles drop like flies

I'm not thrilled about it
sweeping and watering twice a day
this lemon better last til Christmas
or there'll be hell to pay

I love receiving Christmas cards
and have them hanging on my door
the pictures of all the children
increase my spirit all the more

I'm slightly disappointed
that Scarlett turns up her nose
at a most beloved tradition...
watching all the Christmas shows

She won't sit still for Rudolph
she's sick of Charlie Brown and his tree
she'll glance at Frosty for a second
but the sight of Whoville makes her flee

We're obsessed with Christmas music
I love almost every song
Scarlett also has her favorites
and likes to sing along

I burn scented tarts like a lunatic
from Yankee Candle every year
I buy thirty at every dollar sale
it's like the frigging North Pole in here

I'm looking forward to the holiday
and Santa's visit most of all
I can't wait to see Scarlett's little face
at the first sight of her haul

We'll enjoy our time with family
as we are lucky to do each year
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas
and holiday season filled with cheer!

With love,
Sheri

A Christmas Ode...

'Twas four nights before Christmas
and all through the halls
background noises were buzzing
and shaking the walls

The airplanes were plenty
the heat running hard
the dishwasher sloshing
the Brody on guard

The Griswolds adorned
the Samsung TV
whilst I sat draped in fleece
just feet from the tree

Glowing and twinkling
the tree did its best
to pry Christmas spirit
from those who detest

Each ornament hung
with the care of skilled nurses
as the needles pricked fingers
drawing blood and some curses

Candy canes dangled
strategically tucked
they sure taste like crap
what do you want for a buck?

Then there's the oldies
the little green clock
the guy I call "corn man"
the mom-knitted sock

And from my crib mobile
a sweet, yellow bear
my brother's before mine
a staple, each year

And my favorite of all
you may know his name
with a weird, Amish beard
and maniacal mane

In his handsome, green suit
he hangs front and center
greeting and sizing up
all those who enter

Fred is his name
and he's crafted from felt
about fifty years old
with a pretty sweet belt

But he's not just a tree-decker
no, that just won't do
Fred hangs in our bedroom
the whole year through

He sways from a curtain rod
looking out at the shed
he twirls around clumsily
from the hook in his head

But one December day
at the end of each year
he's placed on the tree
to spread his strange cheer

So, Fred, my favorite,
this ode's from my heart
I'll keep you forever
if you don't fall apart

Happy Holidays!!

Love,
Sheri

Second Annual Christmas Eve poem...

Please feel free to sing this to the tune of "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" - which is exactly how it popped into my head... Enjoy ...
It's that time of year again
and we're hosting Christmas Eve
Now to plan the menu of snacks
that our guests will receive
We don't do fancy dinners
'cause we only have four plates
So have some cheese and crackers
or a handful of effing dates
Don't worry, there'll be alcohol
White Russians and Rum & Coke
The vodka put us over budget
so enjoy 'cause now we're broke
The decor is pretty high calibur
Paper dishes and plastic spoons
and I ate the bag of coconut
hence the lack of macaroons
I apologize for Brody
Chasing the kids and stealing food
His harness and muzzle are no match
for his super festive mood
Please take home some cookies
or a baggie of stale chips
Otherwise you'll see them next week
added to my hips
Thank you all for coming
for food and laughs and fun
Now go home and wait for Santa Claus
and "God Bless Us, Everyone".
